Shrub club experiment No. 2

Hello Shrub Clubbers! Here's a salty ocean experiment!

What You Need:

  • A wide plastic bowl
  • A smaller jar or glass for collecting the clean water
  • A large piece of clear plastic—plastic wrap works
  • String or rubber band to hold plastic in place
  • Stone
  • Salt
  • Blue food coloring (optional)

What You Do:

  1. Mix salt into some tap water and put the salty water in the bottom of your bowl.
  2. Place your jar in the middle of your bowl. Make sure the water is below the height of your jar. This would also be the time to put the blue food coloring in.
  3. Cover the bowl with the plastic wrap. Make sure that it's secured tightly at the edges. Use a string or rubber band to seal off the edges.
  4. Place a stone in the middle of the plastic wrap just above your jar.
  5. Carefully move your salty sea solar still into the sun and let it sit for about half an hour.
  6. After the salty sea solar still has been out in the sun for a while, return to it and record your observations.
  7. After a few hours, when you take your salty sea solar still apart, taste the water in the jar. What happened? Did you notice drops of water appearing on the inside of the plastic? Where did they come from?

Caves

Hello! This is Sun with the Shrub Club News! Today it's about... caves!!!

Stalactites and stalagmites

Caves are almost everywhere, to lava holes to even underwater! Underwater caves? Yes, there are really caves that go underwater! Speaking of water, did you know that you can't have a cave without it? Stalactites and stalagmites need it to grow! What are stalagmites and stalactites? Stalactites hang from the ceiling. Here's a way to remember it. They hang tight (tite) to the ceiling! Stalagmites are growing from the ground. You recall it by thinking you might (mite) trip over it! Funny, huh! One cave, called Cave of the Mounds, in Wisconsin, was found by people blowing up dynamite on an old barn that had the cave underneath it. There is a trilobite fossil in it! A trilobite is like an octopus, only with a shell. Have you ever been to a cave? Make a goal to go to one!

Your assignment this time is to determine what your Shrub Name is (Mine's Sun) and put it in the comment button. (e.x. Solei - Sun.)  Also name one of your talents and if you want to be in Troop of the glowing Emerald as a prey-hunter, a battler, or a cave guard apprentice (like me, sun that makes gold stripes). We'll get you with a mentor in no time at all! See you later!!!

Global Warming

Hello! This is Clover here with the Shrub Club News! This time it's about Global Warming!

Global Warming is caused by a substance called CO2. That's what makes the things that makes your  life so good for you. The CO2, also called greenhouse gas, tries to escape the Earth's atmosphere, but it cannot. Then it traps all the heat and ends up making everything hotter. It acts a little like a supervillian to the Earth. This is why it's bad. According to www.kidzworld.com,  this is bad because temperatures have gotten more than 1 degree higher in the past 140 years. That's bad because someday  in the future, things could be a lot hotter and bad for animals and plants and eventually animals could all be extinct!!!!
:(
Okay, so now to the assignment. Your assignment is to design a poster that goes with this topic:

Save the World!
Goodbye for now!!!! See you again!

Save China's Animals

Persuasive essay response from Hawk:

I do not think people should cut down bamboo trees. When you cut down bamboo trees, lots of animals are endangered. 2 major ones are the panda and giant panda. The panda and giant pandas are almost exactly alike except for size. They live in the bamboo trees and even though they grow fast and are strong, backing you up, Radish, There are not many pandas left in the wild! They only live in a small area and bamboo can grow everywhere!! (Except Antarctica) Now that's just sad! You can't cut down bamboo trees, or the animals that live there might be extinct!

Save the Pandas!

Persuasive Essay Response from Radish:

I do not believe people should cut down bamboo trees in China.

My reason is that when you cut down bamboo trees in China you endanger panda bears. Bamboo trees are a panda bear’s main food. 100 panda bears are in captivity and only 1600 are in the wild. If they cut down bamboo trees, the panda bears could be extinct.

I think if they cut down bamboo trees they should plant more.

Yes, they grow fast- up to 7 inches a day. They are strong. They can hold a lot of weight. According to www.Midatlanticbamboo.com, “tensile strength of plated bamboo cables is as strong as or stronger than a steel cable of the same size.”

Bamboo can also be grown in other places, just about anywhere, even places as cold as Iowa. Builders can grow and cut down the Bamboo there instead of China.

I believe people should cut down bamboo in other places besides China. Bamboo is strong and grows fast, and it can grow just about anywhere. It’s a panda bear’s main food. When you cut bamboo in China, you endanger Panda bears. These reasons are why I believe people should not cut down bamboo trees in China.

About Herb

Clover here with the Shrub Club News! This time it's about the Shrub Club Mascot!

This is Herb.

Herb is the Shrub Club's mascot. He represents...well, nature! Why is he the mascot? 1. It fits the club's name. 2. He is nature.  3. It's awesome!! About number 1 and 2. The Founding Cousins thought of the club name by attaching the name to something in nature. For number 3, 'I failed to see how you failed to see that it's awesome (from Big Hero 6)!  I even have a Shrub Club wallet, and you might want to make your own Shrub Club things, so I'll show you how to draw Herb. First, you draw a cloud shape for his body and leaves. Second, you draw two brown twigs for his arms and hands. Third, sketch two circles, and connect them to the sides of his body for glasses. And finally, draw his pupils and his big smile. Now that's happy! Another variation is to add on a cap that shows the recycling sign on it!
Your assignment for this week is to write a persuasive essay on if you think people should continue to cut down bamboo trees because they grow really fast. Why or why not? I'd love to see what you guys think!

Farewell this time, and next time, I'll have a brand-new topic and assignment!
Goodbye!
